The Conservatives have chosen Keith Ashfield to run as their Fredericton candidate in the next federal election.

Approximately 1,400 Conservative supporters turned out at the Capital Exhibition Centre for the nomination meeting on Wednesday night.

It took two ballots for Ashfield to narrowly beat local developer and military veteran Brian MacDonald in a 440 to 432 vote.

William Forrestall, a local artist, was eliminated on the first ballot after he netted 134 votes.

Ashfield is currently the provincial Tory MLA for New Maryland-Sunbury West.

The Fredericton riding has been held by Liberal Andy Scott since 1997.

Scott announced this year he would not run for re-election.

"With a lot of hard work I think we can win this riding," Ashfield told the crowd after winning the nomination.

The Liberals have chosen David Innes as their candidate for the riding.
