Riders on Moncton's express bus routes are now able to surf the internet all the way to their destination.
The free wireless internet will be available on Codiac Transit's four express routes.
"We are the first municipality in Canada to deploy public broadband internet on public transit," said Dan Babineau, Moncton's director of information systems. The city already offers free access to a wireless network in its downtown core, said Babineau, and putting it on the buses is the next logical step.
"We are moving into the future with this service."
The service uses a mobile internet connection that will allow any piece of Wi-Fi enabled technology to connect to the web.
Babineau said he hopes the new service will draw more students and working professionals onto the bus.
Its launch reflects the role technology is playing in people's everyday lives, said John Allain, general manager of Codiac Transit.
"Travelling on a bus can be productive time whether you are reading a newspaper, organizing your daily calendar or e-mailing friends," Allain said.
As the project goes forward, Babineau said, GPS tracking will be added to the buses so that waiting riders can access the transit service's website and see where their vehicle is.
The buses equipped with the technology are marked with a lime green Wi-Fi logo.
