The largest ever child pornography investigation in New Brunswick has resulted in the arrest of seven people and the confiscation of sexual images depicting infants, police said Thursday.
Six people in the province, as well as one man in Montreal, have been arrested in connection with an ongoing international investigation into child pornography.
Five warrants were issued and searches were carried out on Wednesday in the New Brunswick communities of Grand Falls, New Maryland, Dieppe, Haut-Paquetville and Caraquet, RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Derek Strong said.
Police seized six desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, CDs and DVDs at the homes.
The seized images show young males, ranging in age from four months to 14 years old, in a sexual context, RCMP Cpl. Jackie Basque said.
"They can be very graphic, especially when we're talking about the infants," Basque said.
The RCMP are not saying how many images were recovered. The arrests are just the beginning of the investigation, Basque said.
Charges have not yet been laid, and three of the people have been conditionally released with the promise to appear in court at a later date, the police said. They must not have contact with children under the age of 14, not work in a location with children, and not go to parks or public places where children gather.
The remaining three people arrested in New Brunswick have also been released while the investigation continues. It is not believed they pose a threat to the community, Basque said.
There is no evidence so far to suggest that any of the children in the seized images are from New Brunswick, she added.
Police were acting on information originating from a search conducted in Germany.
