Moncton Mayor Lorne Mitton will not seek another term in next spring's municipal election, he announced Thursday morning.

Mitton worked in the transportation industry before being elected in May 2004.

He broke the news before a small group of supporters, saying he's leaving politics to spend his retirement years with his family.

A practiced golfer and passionate curler, Mitton and his wife, Carolyn, have five children and 11 grandchildren.

Reflecting on his accomplishments, Mitton mentioned the growing retail and cultural sectors in Moncton, as well as development at the Magnetic Hill concert site and a new stadium.

But he also spoke about one big disappointment: the city's on-again, off-again plans for a convention centre.

Despite efforts to please developers and secure funding, Mitton was not able to break ground on the project, which has been in the works since the late 1990s.

"I would have liked to see that happen," he said. "The day after I was elected, [to get] a cheque from the federal government to build a convention centre. Didn't happen," he said.

Mitton will complete his term as mayor, officially stepping down after the election in May.
