A 19-year-old man from Hillsborough appeared in Moncton court this afternoon in connection with a fatal car accident on the weekend.

Satara Steeves, 14, was struck and killed on the Ryan Road in Moncton late Friday night.

Alexander Beers faced charges of impaired driving causing death, and has been released from custody on a number of conditions.

  • He must surrender his driver's licence and isn't allowed to operate any motor vehicle.
  • He's not allowed to possess or consume alcohol.
  • The court ordered him to not have any contact, direct or indirect, with the victim's family.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 23, when Beers is scheduled to elect a mode of trial and enter a plea.

Steeves was a student at Harrison Trimble High School in Moncton.

School principal Steve Mitton says counsellors at the school are helping fellow students deal with their grief.
