The New Brunswick government is set to announce 200 new jobs for Miramichi, a city that could use some good news with recent word that four mills are affected by shutdowns.

Business New Brunswick won't identify the new company before the Monday announcement.

A spokesperson for the province said it is not a New Brunswick-based business. After consultations with the government, the company decided to set up operations in the New Brunswick's fourth largest city, which has a population of about 18,500.

The province says it believes the business may create even more jobs down the road.

The four mill closures announced this month will put 800 people out of work.

Two UPM mills in Miramichi will be shut down for nine months to a year, starting in August. A Weyerhaeuser mill in the city has closed permanently. Another UPM mill in Blackville closed in late April.

The province says the 200 new jobs are meant to help diversify the city's economy, and not replace the mill jobs.

Corrections and Clarifications

  • The UPM mill that closed was in Blackville, not in Bathurst, as was originally reported. UPM also closed its Bathurst mill for two weeks in May, but it is currently operating at half-capacity. June 20, 2007|2:56 p.m. ET
