RCMP are investigating the suspicious death of an infant in Old Ridge, near St. Stephen, N.B., and a 26-year-old woman is in custody, police said Wednesday.
Cpl. Gilles Blinn said officers answered a call at a residence in Old Ridge at about 9 p.m. AT Tuesday. There they located the body of an infant, under a year old, outside the home.
Blinn said police are still interviewing witnesses and haven't laid any charges at this point.
"The investigators have to make sure that basically their ducks are in a row before charges are laid, if any in this case, and it's too early to tell," he said. "It's a sensitive investigation … gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses could take some time."
Police would also not say whether the woman in custody was child's mother.
Blinn said a forensic autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. AT Thursday in Saint John. Officials will reveal the sex of the baby afterward.
Old Ridge is just outside the St. Stephen town limit, on Highway 3.
