Conservative Leader Bernard Lord has finally unveiled his party's full election platform, containing promises that could cost New Brunswickers $139 million if the Tories win a third term in office.
Wednesday's announcement makes the Tories the last of the three parties to release a platform – less than a week before the Sept. 18 vote.
Most of the Tory platform had already been announced, but the release contained one surprise — a pledge to reduce personal income tax by eight per cent.
The other promises include a plan to cut the gas tax by 30 per cent, a $500 annual tax credit for parents who put their children in athletic or cultural activities, a $500 tax credit for tradespeople who have to buy tools for work and a promise to work harder to bring expat New Brunswickers home.
Lord said the Tories would save $34 million with the promise to remove more people from the welfare system and said there would be enough money coming in to pay for his commitments.
"It just comes from the normal growth of the economy. We've projected revenue growth to far exceed this, but we need some of the additional revenue growth to maintain existing programs that grow in cost as well," he said.
"So this is a progressive, conservative platform. It's progressive in its measures, but it's conservative that we'll be able to meet the Fiscal Responsibility Act."
