An early-morning fire at a downtown Moncton rooming house has left 16 people homeless.

Firefighters received the call just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, and arrived to find one side of the home on fire, with smoke pouring out of an upper window.

The interior of this Moncton rooming house was destroyed by fire early Wednesday, leaving 16 people homeless.

Crews brought the fire under control, but not before part of the house was gutted.

Police say the residents escaped unhurt.

Investigators are still looking into what caused the blaze.

Neighbour George Shaw says he's known the owner, Trudy Cormier, for years and says the building was recently renovated.

"They just finished it up in the last year and it's pretty much gone now," he said.

Shaw says he didn't know any of the residents of the house, and worries about them being able to find affordable shelter in the city.

"It was a full house," he said. "They had lots of tenants in there, maybe some people on welfare, some low-income wage earners."

The 16 tenants are being assisted by the Red Cross, which will provide food and help them find temporary shelter.

Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze.
