Moncton-area Liberal MP and Minister of Labour, Claudette Bradshaw, says she's going to do everything possible to attract aerospace jobs to the community.
Tuesday, the federal government announced another step in the planned construction of a $9 million regional air terminal in Moncton. Bradshaw says that's just the beginning.
She has a picture of the Greater Moncton International Airport on the wall of her office in Ottawa. It's there to remind her about the facility's potential. She's aiming even higher and working to attract high- paying, high-tech aerospace jobs.
Bradshaw says the city of Moncton has a proven track record when it comes to attracting new industry. "Aerospace industries attract other industries much like call centres have attracted other call centres to this area. First there was one, then there was another and another until greater Moncton became the call centre capital of New Brunswick."
Passenger and cargo numbers continue to climb at the airport. Airport spokesman, Kent Robinson, says July's numbers tell the tale. "We just got the numbers in and for the first time ever, we had in excess of 50,000 passengers move through our airport facility in a month and that's very good news for our airport."
Bradshaw says improvements to the airport and growth at the Moncton Flight College are good indications of how well the industry is doing. She hopes the aerospace industry will be the next sector to take off.
