A St. Mary's First Nation woman escaped unhurt from a house fire on Maliseet Drive on Thursday afternoon.

Platoon Captain Peter McMurtrie with the Fredericton fire department said the call came in at about 2:15 p.m.

McMurtrie said when firefighters arrived at the house on Maliseet Drive there was smoke coming from the basement windows.

He said the fire was out in about 20 minutes and most of the damage confined to the basement, but there was smoke throughout the house.

McMurtrie says 14 firefighters responded with four trucks.

A family was at least temporarily displaced.

Police, paramedics and NB Power also responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
