Police and fire department continue to investigate

A Saint John man was found dead after a house fire in the city’s north end on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Barry Oickle, the city's acting district chief, said he has few details about the incident on Mount Pleasant Avenue, other than to say the fire started in the basement area of the raised bungalow.

District Chief Peter Saab said firefighters were attacking the fire from inside the home and discovered the man.

"The victim was found from what I understand, it was hard to describe whether it was a sitting room den-type thing or maybe being used for something else at the time, that's still undetermined," Saab said.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, where they later found the man.

"He was where the greatest amount of fire was, was where the victim was found," Saab said.

It's not yet clear if he died before or after the fire.

Saint John Police and the city's fire prevention unit are investigating.
