A Saint John house in the Red Head area has been hit by fire for the second time in about two months.

Fire crews responded to a fire at 189 Ocean Drive around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, which is in a subdivision off Red Head Road.

Eric Garland, the district fire chief, said the home had been sitting vacant because the people who lived there had been forced out by a previous fire more than a month ago.

He said it appears renovations may have been underway at the home, but this latest fire has destroyed the home.

Garland said homes on either side were evacuated and residents were expected to return within a couple of hours.

He said the heat from the fire was so intense that it melted the siding on homes two houses away.
