A thief armed with a weapon broke in to a home in Saint John's east side and took a number of items, police say.

Saint John Police were called to a home in the Michael Crescent area at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Sgt. Chuck Elgee said the thief had a weapon.

"He robbed them and fled on foot out the back door," Elgee said.

Police are not saying what was taken from the home.

Elgee said there were a couple of children inside the home at the time. No one was hurt.

The suspect is described as a man in his early 20s, about six feet tall.
