A crash between Moncton and Shediac has sent two people to hospital with serious injuries.

RCMP Const. Damien Thériault said a man and a woman were struck by a vehicle on Highway 15 around noon.

Thériault said what is thought to be a barbecue flew off the back of a vehicle. The driver stopped to pick it up and a second vehicle stopped to help.

According to Thériault, both vehicles affected the flow of traffic, and a third vehicle coming up from behind was not able to stop in time. That vehicle swerved to avoid a collision with the stopped vehicles, but instead hit two pedestrians.

They were taken to hospital in Moncton with serious injuries.

The crash has closed the eastbound lane of Route 15 at the intersection of Highway 2 and is causing traffic headaches for travellers.

The RCMP are investigating but said because of the number of people going to the beach, travellers can expect delays.

The RCMP said the accident should be cleared up in the next few hours.
