Policehave identified three teenagers killed Wednesday night when the car they were in rolled over into a ditchnear Cambridge Narrows.
Jesse Stewart, 17, was driving the family car and two friends, Eric Bond, 16,andR.J. Vail, 17,were passengers.
The RCMP said the vehicle went off the road on Highway 695 in the White's Cove area, rolled several times and landed in the ditch, but they don't know why.
"They were travelling on a straight stretch of road," said RCMP Cpl. Claude Tremblay.
"We don't know at this time why they [went into] the ditch, whether it was a deer, a moose, a mechanical breakdown. That's still being investigated."
One of the boys wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
Community sets up grief counselling centre
Peter Knight, the mayor of Cambridge Narrows, said his community is in shock. The three teenswere well known in the area.
Knight said two of the boys' families have lived in the village all their lives, and the boys went toschool together.
"Certainly, it's a small school, [a] very tight-knit school where everybody knows everybody," said Knight. "It really puts shockwaves through the community when a tragedy like this happens so close to home."
Knight said a grief counselling centre has been set up at the municipal building for any students and parents who want to drop in.
"The word's getting around right now that this is available," he said. "We have a grief counsellor here and we also have the vice-principal and one other teacher available at the municipal building."
