Quispamsis singer Jill Godin wins national contest
Original song Shattered wins $50,000 worth of studio time from Universal Music Canada
A New Brunswick woman has beat out hundreds of competitors to win the national "It's Your Shot" singing competition.
Jill Godin of Quispamsis, N.B. won $50,000 worth of studio time from Universal Music Canada and Slaight Records — the same label as Canadian recording artist k-os — for her original song Shattered. With the funding, she'll be able to record a six-song EP.
"Gary Slaight called me himself and he's the owner of Slaight Music which was amazing," said Godin. "And he said, `I can't wait to put your song on the radio' and that's words I've been waiting to hear for 20 years."
Godin, 20, said she's been singing since she was she was two years old and couldn't have come this far without the support of her family.
"They're all really really proud," she said. "I think my mom cried more than I did. They've been through this entire journey with me, so they've been to every talent show, singing lesson, recital everything like that — waiting as long as I have."
Godin plans to relocate to Toronto in the new year to record her songs and pursue her musical career.
