Quebec trucker gets 5 years in prison for Moncton sex assault
Maurice Cloutier, 55, duct-taped victim's hands, ripped off her clothes, sexually assaulted her
A Quebec truck driver who attacked a 24-year-old sex worker in Moncton in April has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Maurice Cloutier, 55, of Sainte-Martine, had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault.
On Friday, Crown prosecutor Annie St. Jacques relayed the facts of the case in Moncton provincial court as Cloutier looked on from the prisoner's box in handcuffs and shackles.
She said Cloutier picked up the woman on Park Street on April 25 at around midnight. He then drove with her in his tractor trailer to the parking lot of Moncton High School.
Cloutier refused to pay the woman for sex, said St. Jacques. Instead, he hit her three times, duct-taped her hands, ripped her clothes off and sexually assaulted her, she said.
Witnesses called 911 after they saw a young woman running naked in a parking lot near the intersection of Church Street and Mountain Road, screaming for help, RCMP stated in a news release at the time.
The truck left the scene before police could stop it, but officers managed to track down the truck and arrested Cloutier, who was initially charged with aggravated sexual assault and forcible confinement.
Cloutier told the court he pleaded guilty to sexual assault in the hopes of getting back to Quebec.
But Associate Chief Judge Pierre Arseneault said he had no power over that. He said it was a matter for Corrections Canada.
Cloutier has a lengthy criminal record, the courtroom heard. It includes property crimes, an assault, and a 10-year-sentence for attempted murder.
He also spent four years in treatment for sexual delinquency.
The judge decided five years in prison would be a reasonable sentence.
Cloutier cried as he asked for a publication ban on his name and conviction in order to protect his wife and family, but the judge refused.
Arseneault also ordered Cloutier to provide a DNA sample and for his name to be on the national sex offender's registry.
