Moncton shooting involving police leaves 1 man dead
Incident began near Moncton Coliseum early Saturday morning
A man is dead after shots were fired following an incident with police that began near the Moncton Coliseum early Saturday morning.
Shortly before 6 a.m., Codiac RCMP responded to a complaint of someone who was armed breaking into a vehicle near the Moncton Coliseum, police said in a news release.
The person who called police was in the vehicle while the armed man in his 30s was causing damage, attempting to break in.
RCMP officers arrived at the scene with a canine unit and went looking for the individual.
As police searched for the man, shots were fired around 7 a.m. near Whitney and Jordan Avenue in Moncton.
A man in his 30s was later pronounced dead.
Denise Reed lives in an apartment on Whitney Avenue. She said she was woken up Saturday morning by gunshots.
"Four or five gunshots and police were all over telling people to go back in until everything was under control," she said.
Reed said she saw an ambulance, a fire truck and several police cars.
The investigation into the incident has been handed over to Fredericton police who will be taking over all aspects of the case.
