The City of Moncton is now enforcing a helmet bylaw that requires anybody skating at a municipal rink to wear head protection.

The aim is to prevent head injuries. Skaters must have a helmet made for ice sports and approved by the Canadian Standards Association.

Previously only children under the age of 12 had to wear one. The new bylaw came into effect on Jan. 1.

Figure skaters who have successfully completed the CanSkate program are exempt from the bylaw during practices and competitions.
