Codiac RCMP are warning of a telephone fraud aimed at seniors in the Moncton area and say one victim was bilked out of more than $5,000.

Police say in one case a fraudster called a victim and claimed a family member needed money because they had been in an accident but weren't covered by insurance. The caller urged the victim to buy a prepaid Visa card and hand over the number and CSV code.

Police say they received similar complaints from other older people targeted last week. One person fell for the scam, while two others refused to give money.

RCMP are urging people to be vigilant about checking all the facts before sending money anywhere, even if the situation seems urgent. One tip is to call other family members to see if the story checks out.
