A body found in the St. John River near Fredericton Monday morning has been identified as that of a missing man.

Michael John Lyons, 25, was last seen on June 20.

"An autopsy is expected to be scheduled and the investigation into the cause of death is continuing," Fredericton Police Const. Danielle Carmichael stated in a release.

Police, fire crews and a coroner responded to the scene behind 1297 Lincoln Rd., east of the Experimental Farm.

Police said a boater spotted the body around 10:20 a.m. and called the communications centre.

The body was taken away by police in an unmarked Ford Flex just after 12 p.m.

Police held up a blue blanket to block the view of the body as they loaded it into the back of the vehicle.

Lyons was last seen near Saunders Street.

His gym bag was found Thursday on a footpath. The bag contained all of his personal belongings, including his wallet and credit cards.

He was reported missing by his family June 21.
