Moncton firefighters spent most of Sunday evening battling flames in a commercial building on Millenium Drive that also houses several apartments.

Robert Brine, the fire platoon chief, said a few people were home and didn't realize there was a fire until emergency responders arrived. All of them made it out of the building safely.

By 8 p.m., firefighters had knocked down most of the fire, but there was still a significant amount of smoke, said Brine. He expected they would remain on the scene late into the night.

Fire investigators will look into what caused the fire once the building is cleared.
