Man killed in fiery crash in Weldon
Robert Powney, 79, was a passenger in a vehicle that left Route 114, overturned and caught fire
A man from Weldon has died following a fiery crash on Route 114 on Tuesday.
Robert Powney, 79, was a passenger in a vehicle that went off the road and overturned in the community near Hillsborough at about 3:30 p.m., say RCMP.
The vehicle caught fire and Powney died in the blaze, Cpl. Dan Poirier said in a statement.
The driver, a man in his 70s, was rescued by local citizens and was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, said Poirier.
His name has not been released.
The investigation is ongoing, but alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the collision, said Poirier.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist is assisting to determine the cause of the crash.
The Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
