Man killed in Baxters Corner shooting
A man from Baxters Corner is in police custody after a fatal shooting outside a home on Raymond Drive.
The police received the call for help just before 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Hampton RCMP said three men went to the home, where a fourth man was inside. Shots were fired and the three were hit.
One man, a 31–year–old from Baxters Corner, was killed. The other two were taken to Saint John Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
Police arrested a 35–year–old from Baxters Corner at the scene. They said other people were in the home at the time but they weren't injured.
Sunday, the RCMP's Major Crime Investigation Unit was on the scene. The CBC's Matthew Bingley said two homes were roped off with police tape.
"The first home is where police say a shooting occurred last night," he said. "At the second home, there is a car parked in the driveway. I was able to count about six bullet holes in it." Bingley said one window in the car was shattered.
Baxters Corner is a small, tight-knit community. Many people were expressing shock at the crime.
"It's been extremely hard," said Lisa Maher, who lives nearby. "I've been awake all evening, very concerned for the well–being of two of my friends."
Terry Garland, who lives across the road from the scene of the shooting, said he was getting ready for supper when the paramedics arrived.
"You could see that they were working on one fellow out in the driveway, trying to resuscitate him," he said.
The name of the man killed has not been released.
Baxters Corner is approximately 30 km northeast of Saint John.
