A 71-year-old man from Eel River Crossing has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with a stabbing in the community on Sunday.

The man did not enter any pleas during an appearance in Campbellton provincial court on Monday.

The judge ordered a 30-day psychiatric assessment, RCMP Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh stated in a news release.

The man is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 7, she said.

RCMP were called shortly before 2 p.m. to the parking lot of a business in Eel River Crossing where a 60-year-old man had been stabbed.

The victim, who is from Eel River Crossing, was airlifted to the Saint John Regional Hospital, where he remains in stable condition, Rogers-Marsh said.
