A 28-year-old New Brunswick man has been arrested for alleged animal cruelty after a dog's body was discovered in a wooded area in Saint-Jacques.

West District RCMP responded to a report about the dog on May 5, Const. Kevin Mazerolle said in a statement.

The dog, located near Maxime Road, appeared to have been killed, he said.

The accused, who was the dog's owner, was arrested later that day.

The man, who is from Saint-Joseph-de-Madawaska, was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Edmundston provincial court on Aug. 13.

RCMP continue to investigate.
