A Shippagan man has been charged with theft after stealing money from a church in northeastern New Brunswick.

A RCMP statement said the 34-year-old man walked into Notre-Dame-des-Flots Church in Lamèque, which was unlocked at the time, on March 15.

Police say he stole money that was being collected from the sale of candles at the church.

The man has been charged with theft under $5,000 and breach of an undertaking to a judge.

He appeared in a provincial court on March 16.

The man will remain in police custody until his next court appearance on April 4.
