An inmate at Atlantic Institution in Renous was found dead in his cell last week, Correctional Service Canada announced on Monday.
Yves Valade, 56, was discovered unresponsive at the maximum security facility on Friday, according to a news release.
Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called, but Valade could not be resuscitated, the release states.
Valade, who was from the Quebec region, had been serving an indeterminate sentence for first-degree murder, second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm.
"As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident," the release states.
Valade's next of kin have been notified of his death.
His sentence commenced on May 19, 1982.
