Police are investigating the discovery of human remains on a small island in Sheffield, east of Fredericton.

The West District RCMP said people were walking near McGowans Corner when they spotted the remains on the island Saturday afternoon.

RCMP forensic identification specialists and the coroner are working to identify the remains and explain what happened.

Cpl. Chantal Farrah said the remains were removed from the island. An autopsy is scheduled for early in the week.

Farrah said investigators believe the remains had been there for a long time.
