Emergency crews have extinguished a house fire on the St. Mary's First Nation reserve on the north side of Fredericton.

The fire department responded to the call at 12:30 p.m. on Paul Street.

They said someone was home at the time of the fire, but was outside by the time crews arrived.

"When crews arrived on scene it was fully involved with heavy smoke coming from the main floor," said acting Platoon Captain Mike Mizner.

They said the damage is extensive, but the house is still standing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
