Highway 8 between Bathurst and Allardville has reopened following a fatal head-on collision Thursday night.

A 44-year-old Paquetville man was killed when his vehicle struck a transport truck at about 8:30 p.m., say RCMP.

The victim's vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 11 near Highway 8 when it swerved into the oncoming lane, Cpl. Mario Lafrance said in a statement.

The truck landed on its side and the truck driver, a 44-year-old woman, was transported to hospital with minor injuries, said Lafrance.

No names have been released.

Hazardous materials teams from Sainte-Anne and Bathurst Fire Departments were on scene, as well as Environment Canada, to control a fuel spill from the transport truck, said Lafrance.

The highway was closed until about 7 p.m. on Friday.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist also attended the scene, he said.

The investigation continues.
