A large seizure of animals in Fredericton on Dec. 4 is putting pressure on the budget at the city's SPCA.
The seizure involved a menagerie of 143 animals, including exotic birds, chinchillas, potbellied pigs, cats and several dogs.
Annette James said the Fredericton SPCA took on all the animals it could manage.
"We took in 12 of the dogs, 13 of the rats and two of the cats," said James.
Each animal taken on from the New Brunswick SPCA seizure had health issues. One cat was put down and the dogs still need care.
James said it will be a big investment for the shelter to care for the animals.
"The dogs have quite a bit of dental work that has to be done," said James. "And it's severe work that's absolutely necessary."
The SPCA is asking for donations to cover the surgeries as the veterinarian bills are into the thousands of dollars and likely to climb.
