Fredericton nursing home closed to visitors due to illness
York Care Centre has 21 sick residents
One of Fredericton's largest nursing homes has cancelled visiting hours, due to an outbreak of gastro-intestinal illness.
The York Care Centre currently has 21 residents suffering from vomiting and diarrhea.
Executive director Kevin Harter says some residents began showing symptoms on Monday.
The ban on visiting by family and friends went into effect on Thursday as a precaution to try to prevent the spread of the disease.
Harter says other precautions such as infection control, isolation and hand-washing have also been put into place.
Medical samples have been sent for testing to identify the bug that's causing the illness, he said.
York Care Centre, located at 100 Sunset Dr., is home to 214 elderly residents.
