A Fredericton hockey coach is heading to Russia at the end of the month for the Olympics.

Tom Coolen is the acting head coach of the Latvian national hockey team.

He has been working with the Latvian team for two years with Ted Nolan, who is now the head coach of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.

Coolen has been a hockey coach for 25 years and coached in Europe, but this is the first time he's coached at the Olympics.

"I have spoken with different people from different areas that have been involved with the Olympic teams and what to expect and so on, so that's helping me get ready," he said.

"There are a lot of distractions. You have to kind of put the blinders on and keep the distractions away once you're there. But as far as getting ready to play, there are certain things, no matter if you're playing in the National Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior League, whatever the case may be, that you have to get ready for."

Coolen says his Latvian is very poor, but thankfully everyone on the team can speak English.
