Firefighters in Havelock are dealing with a serious fire in their own station, which is less than three years old.

Gerald Jones, chief of the Petitcodiac fire department, says officials were alerted Thursday, just before 11:30 am, when a passer-by noticed smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters from Petitcodiac, Salisbury, Elgin, Penobsquis and Riverview responded to the call to assist the Havelock crew.

Jones says one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation during the fire, which appears to have started in one of the trucks.

"We're not sure of the cause, yet," he said.

Jones says the fire is now contained, but firefighters remain on the scene to deal with hotspots.

He says the four-bay garage was badly scorched and five vehicles received extensive damage.

Between 40 and 50 firefighters from surrounding areas responded to the fire, which is now under investigation by RCMP and fire officials.
