A man is temporarily homeless but escaped unharmed after a fire gutted a small home he built himself located about 40 kilometres southeast of Edmundston, N.B.

Fire crews responded to the home on Martin Road outside of Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska at around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

The man who lived in the home is currently staying with friends, with the Canadian Red Cross helping to purchase emergency items such as clothing and food.

There's no word yet on the cause of the fire.
