A Saint John blogger is giving away gifts from local businesses to promote shopping locally at Christmas.

Barb Crawford writes and this year she convinced 30 Saint John shops to give away one prize each for her "Thirty in Thirty" giveaway.

It’s the second year she's organized the event with the hopes of drawing new customers to local shops instead of box stores or U.S. retailers.

"We have really great stores right here in our area and they have the same products that I would buy online. I would like to keep the money where I pay my taxes," she said.

Crawford is a municipal engineer by day, but in her spare time she uses her web presence to indulge her passion for local shops selling everything from food to clothes.

"My main goal with Thirty in Thirty is to open someone's eyes. Even if they find one new store that they didn't know existed, that is a bonus," she said.

Judith Mackin, owner of Tuck Studio, is giving away a designer lamp. She hopes it will become a Christmas present for someone, and get her a new customer.

"I think what is crucial about what Barb's doing is that she's supporting and promoting local," she said.

Crawford says the response has been strong, with her phone regularly buzzing with new entries.
