Bathurst police chase armed driver along Highway 11
Man arrested after abandoning vehicle and running into woods
A man who allegedly pointed a firearm at people in downtown Bathurst on Wednesday was later involved in a police chase that sent him to hospital.
Bathurst police say that just after 10:30 p.m., a patron at the TNT Showbar on St. Patrick Street called them about someone pointing of a firearm.
A short time later, police were able to find the alleged suspect in a vehicle, which led to the chase on Main Street, Bridge Street, Miramichi Avenue and north on Highway 11, the force said in a statement Thursday.
At the exit of King Avenue, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled several times. This caused extensive damage to the vehicle, but the driver was able to get back on the highway.
He sped away on Highway 11 and continued toward the Janeville area, northeast of Bathurst, before abandoning the vehicle, and running into nearby woods, according to the police.
Bathurst police, BNPP Regional Police, RCMP and their canine unit found the man and arrested him. He was taken to Chaleur Regional Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The man was released from hospital on Thursday afternoon and was expected to appear in court on Friday.
Later, officer searched the vehicle and discovered the firearm, police said.
