Two people are in custody after someone assaulted a man in Moncton with an axe.

Just after 11:30 a.m. Monday, a man who was trying to make a deposit at the CIBC at Walsh Street and Mountain Road was assaulted by a person armed with an axe.

Codiac RCMP Const. Damien Theriault said onlookers stepped in to help.

"The suspect fled with the deposit bag.  A witness that was nearby struggled with that person, somebody else came to his aid and they were able to get the deposit bag back from the suspect," he said.

The suspect and an accomplice drove away in a vehicle.

With the help of witnesses, police were able to able to locate the vehicle on Cedar Street.

A 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were taken into custody.

The victim is expected to survive.

Police say the investigation is continuing.
