Two suspects in an armed robbery of a Fredericton drug store on Monday have been arrested following a standoff at an uptown hotel, say police.

A lone person carrying an undisclosed weapon entered the Pharmasave at 640 Prospect St., at about 10:55 a.m. and "made demands," according to a statement.

The suspect obtained undisclosed items and fled the scene in a black SUV, the statement from Fredericton Police Force spokeswoman Alycia Morehouse said.

Asked whether the stolen goods included prescription drugs, or money, or a combination of the two, police said they could not say.

No one was injured, said Morehouse.

The suspects were subsequently located at the nearby Howard Johnson Hotel on Prospect Street, just a few blocks away.

They had barricaded themselves in a hotel room, CBC's Shane Fowler reported from the scene.

The emergency response team and crisis negotiators were called in.

Officers with high-powered rifles and a battering ram were on site, as well as an armoured vehicle and the canine unit, said Fowler.

The area was cordoned off with yellow caution tape and curious passersby were being ordered to stay back.

The suspects eventually surrendered without incident and were arrested at about 3:15 p.m., said Morehouse.

The investigation is ongoing, she said.
