Acadian Games to draw athletes from across Maritimes
Visitors will mean a boost to Bathurst-area businesses
The Bathurst area of New Brunswick is set to welcome young athletes from across the Maritimes this week as it hosts the Acadian Games.
On Sunday, track and field athletes with the local Chaleur Athletics club were in the final stages of preparation, competing in a small meet in the nearby village of Petit-Rocher.
Jennifer Butler, a coach with the team, says the Acadian Games draw top Acadian athletes.
"We’re hoping to see some more records," she said. "We’ve had some of our athletes break records last year."
The sporting and cultural event kicks off Wednesday and is expected to bring more than a thousand athletes and supporters to the area.
The influx of visitors will mean a boost for Bathurst businesses, including the Atlantic Host Hotel.
"We are actually quite busy," said sales manager Kim Lavigne. "We are full for the duration of the whole week."
