2 in hospital after domestic trailer park dispute
Residents on Crane Court heard gunshots on Wednesday
The Saint John Police major crime unit is investigating a shooting incident that occurred Wednesday night in the Morland Trailer Park on the city's east side.
Police responded to reports of a domestic dispute in a trailer park where a 65-year-old man was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A 51-year-old woman was also taken to hospital seriously injured.
The gunshots were heard on Crane Court.
"There were shuffling, and then you could hear them and they were yelling 'no no no!'" said Jody Bradford, a resident of the area.
She said seconds later she heard the gunshots go off.
Police responded to the call around 8:20 p.m. They set up perimeters around the area and members of the major crime unit were on scene.
Well-liked by community
George Robertson lives in the area and said he saw the Saint John Police in the neighbourhood following the gunshots.
“The last we heard is the lady was taken out, there were no lights and no sirens and the gentleman was taken into custody,” he said.
Bradford said the couple always seemed to get along and are well-liked by the community.
"They're a beautiful couple and lovely neighbours, I wouldn't want anything more. And they lived here over 25 years or more and they always helped around the community," she said.
Bill Smith lives beside the couple and also heard the gunfire. He said within seconds of hearing the call on the police scanner, officers were on scene.
"We're still kind of a little bit in shock," he said. "This is Saint John, you don't see stuff like this too often."
Police say the matter is still under investigation and are not offering anymore details at this time.
