A 17-year-old woman is dead and an 18-year-old man was taken into police custody late Saturday night after a 911 call was placed alerting authorities to a woman in distress.

The woman was found with serious upper-body injuries in a hotel on Sherbrooke Street East near Lacordaire Street in the borough of Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve just before 11 p.m. ET.

"Police officers responded to a 911 call from a man mentioning that a woman was in distress at a hotel on Sherbrooke Street near Lacordaire. Upon their arrival they located the victim, a 17-year-old woman," said Const. François Collard of Montreal police.

The young woman was transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said it is the 12th homicide of the year.
