Victor Poirier charged with murder in death of Chantal Demers

The boyfriend of a Quebec City woman who was arrested shortly after her disappearance in May has now been charged with murder.

The boyfriend of a Quebec City woman who was arrested shortly after her disappearance has now been charged with murder. 

Chantal Demers, 46, was missing for 10 days in May before police found her body in a wooded area in the Portneuf region.

Demers' partner, 47-year-old Victor Poirier, was arrested several days after she disappeared and charged with assault causing bodily harm for offences allegedly committed in April. 

He was charged with first-degree murder Thursday.

Poirier has been in custody since May. Since that time, four other women have filed complaints against him. 

In total, he now faces 17 charges including sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and harassment. 

Those charges relate to alleged events that took place in the past four years.
