A Quebec truck driver who slammed his tractor-trailer into seven cars at an intersection Monday morning told CBC News he was blinded by the sun.

Provincial police said two people are in critical condition after the 16-metre covered semi-trailer collided with cars waiting in the eastbound lane at a stoplight on Highway 20 near Don Quichotte Boulevard in Île Perrot, Que.

The collision caused a chain reaction, leaving a scene that included eight heavily damaged vehicles and a car door flung across the highway.

Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Joyce Kemp said two people had to be rescued from their vehicle.

"They were trapped in their car. The firemen helped us to get them out of the vehicle. The jaws of life were used," said Kemp.

Kemp said several others were also taken to hospital with injuries.

Police closed Highway 20 eastbound between Boulevard de l'Île and Don Quichotte until mid-afternoon.

Police said they were not sure whether there would be any charges laid.
