A woman is dead after the SUV she was driving collided with a freight train at a crossing on Highway 325 near St-Télesphore, around 80 kilometres southwest of Montreal.
Provincial police spokesperson Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau said the collision occurred around 3 a.m.
"Our first information is she might have been speeding," she said.
The woman's car slid and ended up on the rails, Bilodeau said, despite the barriers being down to prevent vehicles from crossing.
"The Jaws of Life were needed to get her out of the car," Bilodeau said.
The woman was taken to hospital in "very critical condition," Bilodeau said, and she was declared dead around 6:15 a.m.
Bilodeau said one hypothesis investigators are considering is whether the woman was trying to beat the train.
An investigation is underway.
