Police are investigating a suspicious fire that sent two children and an adult to hospital in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to a fire in an apartment building on Bedford Road, near Darlington Avenue around 3 a.m.

Heavy smoke led firefighters to evacuate the building's eight units.

"When firefighters entered the building, they noticed some unusual things that may have led to a criminal fire," Montreal police spokesman Manuel Couture said.

The three residents were sent to hospital for smoke inhalation.

The building's interior was heavily damaged.

Police arson investigators are now on the scene.

Bedford Road was closed at Darlington and Wilderton avenues.
