Two suspects have been arrested following a wave of Communauto car battery thefts in Montreal.

Communauto is a car-sharing service with a fleet of about 1,000 in Montreal. More than 100 batteries were stolen from parked cars in recent weeks.

The suspects, a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, were picked up by police late Sunday night in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve after police received a 911 call.

The suspects tried to flee on foot but were quickly intercepted near the corner of Ontario Street and Valois Avenue by police — right next to a Communauto lot.

The man appeared in court on Tuesday to face six charges including car theft, possession of stolen materials, conspiracy and theft under $5,000.

The man will remain detained until his court date. The woman, who is also facing charges, was released with the promise to appear.
