The City of Montreal says it’s not sure how long cleanup operations will take following a record-breaking snowstorm on the last day of winter.
It usually takes four days for the city to remove 20 centimetres of snow, for a total cost of $17 million.
The city says an “army” of 2,200 vehicles and about 3,000 employees will be deployed over the next few days to clear the 35 centimetres that fell on the city in this latest storm.
City spokesperson Jacques-Alain Lavallée said snow removal operations are underway in four boroughs already, and most of the remainder will follow suit Wednesday night.
Since October 1, 2012 Montréal has received about 280 centimetres of snow, almost 33 per cent more than the average for the past 34 years, according to the City of Montreal.
Last winter, the city only received 153 centimetres.
